As forecasted, the rain is pouring down in Bengaluru and as a result the toss and the start of play of the opening day of the first Test match between India and New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has been delayed. The covers are firmly in place and with rain predicted to interrupt throughout the day, the probability of getting 80-90 overs in a day looks bleak.

It has been raining in Bengaluru for the last few days and there is plenty of rain expected on the first two days of this Test. There could be showers on the remaining day as well and it is expected to be another shortened Test match with rain taking centrestage for the majority of time.

Excellent Drainage System At Chinnaswamy Provides Hope

The good thing about M. Chinnaswamy is that it has excellent drainage system and the play can be expected to start in quick time as soon as the rain stops. However, for that too, the rain has to stop and going by the forecast, it seems that there is less probability of it stoping soon.

It is a three-match Test series between the finalist of the 2021 WTC final and if India win the series by 3-0 margin, they would most probably book a place in the 2025 final as well. New Zealand, on the other hand, are starting a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of Tom Latham after Tim Southee decided to step down as captain following a series loss to Sri Lanka.

New Zealand last won a Test in India in 1988 and it would be interesting to see how they tackle a rampant Indian side at home.
