A spin-heavy England edged out Bangladesh in a low-scorer at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on October 5 in match number six of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

Here’s the timeline of how ENG-W Vs BAN-W panned out in Sharjah:

ENG-W Vs BAN-W Highlights: BAN Fight Back After Bouchier, Wyatt’s Opening Blitz

English openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge justified their captain’s call of batting first by extracting 47 runs in the powerplay.

Bouchier unleashed three boundaries in her 18-ball knock of 23 before she was holed out by Nahida Akter at mid-on off Rabeya Khan.

Bouchier’s dismissal ended up hampering the English momentum as they soon slipped to 76-4 around 12 overs. Nat Sciver-Brunt, captain Heather Knight and Alice Capsey all fell in quick succession courtesy of Fahima Khatun and Ritu Moni. Danni Wyatt herself fell for a near run-a-ball 41 to become the first of Nahida Akter’s two victims of the evening.

ENG-W Vs BAN-W Highlights: Nahida Akter, Ritu Moni Restrict ENG To 118

Despite making 62 from the first 10 overs, England managed to list just 118-7 by the completion of their innings. Barring the two openers, only wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones managed to hit the double-digits through her mere 12*-run effort.

For Bangladesh, bowlers Nahida Akter (2-32), Fahima Khatun (2-18) and Ritu Moni (2-24) all picked up two wickets each while Rabeya Khan (1-15) delivered the opening breakthrough with the wicket of a well-set Maia Bouchier.

ENG-W Vs BAN-W Highlights: English Spinners Engulf BAN Top-Order

English spinners Charlie Dean and Linsey Smith struck within their opening spells to get rid of both Bangladesh openers. Captain Nigar Sultana led Bangladesh’s rescue act with a steady 35-run partnership with number three Sobhana Mostary to take their team past the 50-run mark.

However, an unfortunate runout of Sultana at 52-3 in 11.3 overs tilted the tide back in England’s favor. Sarah Glenn instantly got into the act by knocking over Shorna Akter as Bangladesh slipped to 55-4 in 12.2 overs in a small chase of 119.

Sobhana Mostary at number three carved 44 cautious runs from 48 balls to keep Bangladesh’s run-chase alive amidst tumbling top-order wickets. It was her downfall in the penultimate over to Charlie Dean that extinguished all hopes of a late Bangladeshi uprising.

With spinners Linsey Smith (2-11) and Dean (2-22) claiming four wickets between them, England kept Bangladesh down at 97-7 to secure a 21-run win for themselves.
