AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has amplified political opposition to the upcoming India-Pakistan Asia Cup match scheduled for September 14th, citing the recent Pahalgam terror attack. His stance echoes a broader sentiment within sections of the opposition demanding a boycott of sporting ties with Pakistan.

Owaisi raised the issue during a Lok Sabha discussion on Operation Sindoor, India's retaliatory strikes against terror hubs in Pakistan and PoK, questioning the logic of cricket diplomacy amidst severed trade, airspace, and water links.

Owaisi's Conscience Stand In Lok Sabha Rejects Match

Speaking in Parliament, the Hyderabad MP framed the cricket match as incompatible with current India-Pakistan relations and the memory of the attack victims.

"When Pakistan's aircraft cannot come into our airspace, their boat cannot come into our water, trade has ended, how will you play a cricket match with Pakistan? When we are not giving water, we are stopping 80 per cent of Pakistan's water, saying that blood and water will not flow, you will play a cricket match," Owaisi stated while speaking in the Parliament session.

"My conscience does not allow me to watch that match. Does the government have the courage to call those 25 dead people and say that we took revenge in Operation Sindoor and now you watch the Pakistan match?" Owaisi added, challenging the government.

Political Pushback Triggered By WCL Withdrawal?

The political pushback follows the cancellation of an India-Pakistan match in the World Championship of Legends in England after retired Indian players Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Shikhar Dhawan withdrew, citing the Pahalgam attack.

The Asia Cup 2025, featuring eight teams, runs from September 9. The high-profile group stage clash between India and Pakistan is set for September 14. Both teams are expected to progress to the Super Four stage, potentially leading to a second encounter, with a third possible if both reach the final.
