The last Asia Cup 2025 Super Four match witnessed India taking on Sri Lanka in what was considered a dead-rubber match. The contest occurred at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday, September 26.
However, the meaningless contest was the most exciting match of the tournament. The game went into a super over after Sri Lanka's thrilling chase of 202, thanks to Pathum Nissanka's brilliant century. India also had impressive individual batting performances, but Sanju Samson's knock was the most impactful.
Sanju Samson named Impact Player vs Sri Lanka
Sanju Samson came to bat at No. 5, which is not his usual batting position. Despite that, he batted like a proper finisher, smashing 39 runs off just 23 balls, including a four and three sixes at a strike rate of 169.57. His knock helped India to go past the 200-run mark in the end.
He also contributed enough with his gloves behind the wicket, stumping the dangerous-looking Kusal Perera on 58 runs. For his all-round work during the match, Samson was presented with the Impact Player medal by the team physiotherapist, Yogesh Parmar. After receiving the medal, Samson said he was proud to contribute during crucial moments.
"All this small appreciation really means a lot to all of us, and personally, I take a lot of pride in being in this dressing room. I am very, very happy to contribute and give my best as we all do. Thank you so much," he said.
Sanju Samson's batting position & versatility
The Kerala-born cricketer is usually an opening batter and has often proved himself by smashing centuries while opening. However, Shubman Gill's return to the squad and his role as an opener forced Samson to adjust his batting position.
He is yet to have a fixed spot in the batting lineup, but his consistent contributions despite these changes prove that he is ready to bat anywhere the team needs him, even taking on the role of a finisher when required.
