Not Today! Dale Steyn Fails Miserably As '300' Prediction For SRH Goes Wrong vs MI

Former South African pacer Dale Steyn had predicted a historic 300-plus total from Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede. But with SRH struggling at 76/2 after 10.1 overs, even Steyn himself conceded defeat.

The excitement around a potential 300-run innings in IPL history had reached its peak when Dale Steyn boldly tweeted last month, “Small prediction. April 17 we'll see the first 300 in IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to see it happen.”

Steyn Falters With His Prediction

The former SRH bowling coach had every reason to be confident, the Hyderabad franchise recently smashed 286/6 against Rajasthan Royals, the second-highest total in league history, and hold four of the top five scores in the IPL.

Steyn’s conviction was further backed by SRH’s incredible firepower in their batting lineup, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Ishan Kishan, among others – who had collectively dismantled attacks in recent games. However, after SRH's slow start, Steyn himself admitted defeat with a tweet.

SRH Falter at Wankhede

As things currently stand, SRH are crawling at 76/2 in 10.1 overs, after Mumbai Indians opted to bowl first. Despite a promising start from Abhishek Sharma (40 off 28), wickets of Ishan Kishan (2) and Abhishek in quick succession slowed the innings drastically. Travis Head has been unusually sedate with 25 off 25 balls, while Nitish Reddy has looked scratchy with just 4 off 6 deliveries.

The scoreboard, at a run rate of just 7.48, paints a grim picture for Steyn’s ambitious prediction. With the halfway stage crossed and only 76 runs on board, SRH will need a miracle to even breach 200, let alone touch 300.

Why SRH Cannot Breach The 300-Mark Today?

On a batting-friendly Wankhede pitch, SRH’s top order hasn’t capitalised. Travis Head, who is usually known for his explosive starts, has batted at a strike rate of 100, far from the firepower needed for a 300-run total. Ishan Kishan, coming off a century in the previous game, departed early, and Nitish Reddy hasn't looked fluent either.

The steady bowling effort from MI has further dented SRH’s plans. Jasprit Bumrah has been frugal, while Will Jacks and Hardik Pandya picked up key wickets to keep the pressure on. The middle order now has to do heavy lifting in the final overs, and unless there’s a late blitz from Klaasen or Abdul Samad, the dream of 300 is well and truly dashed.
