India's prominent speedster Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the first two rounds of the upcoming Ranji Trophy tournament. The experienced campaigner has yet to fully recover from ankle surgery, which he underwent earlier this year.

The Cricket Association of Bengal recently announced the squad for the first two Ranji Trophy encounters. While Mohammed Shami was sidelined, veteran keeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha marked his return to his state team following his two-year association with Tripura as a player and mentor.

Mohammed Shami's Comeback Delayed Due To Ankle Surgery

Mohammed Shami was instrumental in powering India to the ODI World Cup final, where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat in a one-sided contest against the eventual champions Australia. In seven matches, the right-arm pacer bagged 24 wickets at an unbelievable average of 10.71 and a strike rate of 12.21.

However, an unfortunate ankle injury during the tournament sidelined him from competitive cricket for a significant period. Although he hit the nets a few months ago, the seamer hasn't yet regained match fitness.

As a result, Shami, who was tipped to make his comeback with the New Zealand home series, has now been ruled out of the initial Ranji Trophy games, with doubts looming over his participation in the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although India have Jasprit Bumrah to lead their pace battery, it remains to be seen who they pick as Shami's replacement if he misses the flight to Down Under.
