IPL 2022 | Washington Sundar set to miss at least next two games due to hand injury

Sunrisers Hyderabad spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar is set to miss at least the next couple of games for the 2016 champions after he suffered a split webbing in his right hand during Monday's fixture against Gujarat Titans.

The development was confirmed by SRH's head coach Tom Moody, who stated that it would take a week for Washington to recover from the injury.

Moody said, "Washington has torn the webbing between his thumb and first finger in his right hand," Moody said. "We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn't a significant blow. I'd imagine it'd probably take a week to settle down."

Sundar, who endured a poor outing in his first game for the new franchise, has come back well in recent games.

In the game against Gujarat, he bowled three wicketless overs for 14 runs. Two of those overs were bowled in the powerplay, which kept the likes of Hardik Pandya quiet.

In four games this far, Washington has claimed four wickets at an economy rate of 7.86 and in his absence, Sunrisers have J Suchith or Shreyas Gopal as replacements.

However, unlike other teams this season, the Sunrisers have gone with a pace-heavy attack, with Washington and Aiden Markram serving as fifth and sixth bowling options.

"We also consider Aiden Markram as a good sixth bowler, and he bowls spin well. Most teams we've played have quite a few left-handers in their top order, so it has suited us to have eight overs of off-spin if we require," Moody said about his team's plans.

"We haven't yet seen the surface turn a huge amount, but as the tournament unfolds, we may see the conditions change slightly where spinners come into the game, and then that balance of pace versus spin might change," he further added.

There were injury concerns regarding Rahul Tripathi too. The right-handed batsman, who scored an 11-ball 17 during the run-chase, had to retire hurt after he seemed to have pulled his right hamstring.

However, Moody said it's just cramps, and the top-order batsman should be ready for the next game.

"He's fine; he's just getting cramped. It's humid conditions, and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs. So that is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us." said Moody.

SRH completed a commanding eight-wicket win over Gujarat on Monday, and they will look to make it three in a row when they lock horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 15.
