IPL 2022 | OneCricket's Team of the Season

The long journey of two months finally came to an end as Gujarat Titans were crowned the champions of the Indian Premier League season 15. Fans witnessed some commendable knocks in this edition, with some big names living up to all the expectations and some young guns stamping their authority at the biggest stage in franchise cricket.

After a lot of planning, discussing and analysing, our team at OneCricket has come to a consensus and present you with the Team of the Tournament from the Indian Premier League 2022.

Jos Buttler (✈️ ): What a tremendous season it has been for Jos ‘The Boss’ Buttler. The Englishman took the IPL 2022 by storm scoring 863 runs in seventeen appearances overtaking David Warner as the top overseas batter in a single edition.

Buttler also equalled Kohli’s record of four centuries in a single edition. Moreover, the batter bagged the majority of awards in his department, which is the proof needed when someone asks you how dominant Buttler was!

KL Rahul: What started as an expectation has turned into reality. KL Rahul has earned the much-deserved moniker of ‘Modern Day Mr IPL’.

The Karnataka born batter was second to Buttler when it comes to scoring runs this season. The batter accumulated 616 runs this season and is one of the critical reasons for LSG’s march into the knockouts in their debut season. However, one could say his monk-like approach cost them the chance to lift the title.

Rahul Tripathi: He comes, he conquers, and then he’s back on the chopping block. This has been the story for Rahul Tripathi throughout his IPL career. Tripathi has been knocking on the selector's door with a giant log but has been surprisingly unfortunate.

Although, without a shred of doubt, Rahul is the best-uncapped batter in the past few editions of the tournament. Tripathi was the backbone for the Sunrisers the entire season as they were pushed to the hind legs very often this season.

Hardik Pandya (c): If you haven’t been impressed by Hardik Pandya’s captaincy this season, I’d hate to say, but you’ve been living under a rock. The 2022 edition of the tournament saw Pandya’s heroic return as he helped GT bag their maiden title in their debut.

Pandya was essential in both departments for his franchise and proven yet again why it’s too early to write him off.

David Miller (✈️ ): This has been a career rejuvenation for David Miller, the South African finisher has smashed the opportunity across the park with his performance this season. Miller had 481 runs this season with a strike rate of 142, which is nothing short of commendable.

Andre Russell (✈️ ): The journey of the Indian Premier League is incomplete without talking about the ‘Dre Russ’. The West Indian brute has been an absolute monster anytime he steps onto the field. While he lacked impact and consistency this season, his showings in particular games were more than enough to mention his name on this list.

Ravichandran Ashwin: You love him or hate him, but you’ll have to admit that Ravichandran Ashwin is ageing like a fine glass of wine. While many bowlers slowly start to lose their charm, Ashwin keeps growing. The veteran was the unsung hero to Rajasthan's march to the finals contributing with both the bat and the ball this season.

Harshal Patel: While Harshal Patel failed to repeat his stupendous performance from last season, where he bagged 32 wickets, he still played an essential role in RCB’s success this season.

The slog over specialist had nineteen wickets to his name with an economy rate of 7.66. He repeatedly troubled the bowlers with his slower variations and has proved to his critics why he isn’t a ‘One Season Wonder’.

Prasidh Krishna: Krishna has been a surprise for many this season. The young pacer improved on all his shortcomings and proved to be an essential spearhead for the inaugural champions. Krishna was just subliminal with the ball in his hands as the bowler picked up nineteen wickets this season.

The plus point for us was his number of dot deliveries. This season, Krishna topped the list of dot balls, with 200 deliveries bowling the third highest amount of overs this season.

Josh Hazlewood (✈️ ): The Australian’s rise to prominence as one of the best bowlers in the game's shortest format has been nothing short of a fairytale story. Hazlewood was RCB’s best bowler with 20 wickets, only second to Wanindu Hasaranga, who had twenty-six against the tally.

Hazlewood has been finding success in the format with his Test match line and length, which proves the essence of red-ball cricket when it comes to the game.

Yuzvendra Chahal: The Purple Cap holder finished with twenty-seven wickets to his name at the end of the tournament. Chahal was terrific this season and picked the only hattrick of the season. It would be a surprise if one were to omit Chahal from their team of the season after a commendable season.

While there were a lot of names under consideration, and it was tough to make the final call, there were some players who barely missed the cut of making it into the Team of the Tournament due to certain team combinations.

Notable Mentions: Wanindu Hasaranga (✈️ ), Quinton de Kock (✈️ ), Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada (✈️ ), Dinesh Karthik

Daniel Sams opens up on his IPL campaign for Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Daniel Sams has recently opened up on his team's campaign in the recently concluded season of Indian Premier League (IPL). He stated that the five-time champions didn't perform the way they wanted to do as well. Notably, they had a rather forgettable season where they finished at the bottom of the points table. The Australian all-rounder further said that talking to head coach Mahela Jayawardena and bowling coach Shane Bond had helped him during the tournament. "Chatting with MJ (Mahela Jayawardene) and Bondy (Shane Bond) I found really helpful. There was a conversation I had with MJ just about what he did when he was struggling and he just talked about keeping it simple, being relaxed," Sams said in a recent video shared by MI. However, the most successful franchise in tournament history finished with just four wins and ten defeats. Moreover, Mumbai recorded eight consecutive defeats before opening their account in their ninth match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the cash-rich league. While talking about the team's performance, Sams said that it didn't go as per the plans but they are excited for the upcoming seasons. "I think it (has) not been the most ideal season. I actually see it as a necessary season for myself, for everyone to become better cricketers, better people. We haven't quite performed the way we wanted to, but we're excited with what's to come next year. A lot of us in this squad have had to learn and deal with a lot of stuff because of the way that we have performed," he again shared. However, the Ambani-owned club finished off their campaign on a winning note as they not only defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) in their last league game but also knocked them out of the playoff race. After the win, skipper, Rohit Sharma said: "We were here to win the game. I know few teams were watching us closely, but we wanted to finish on a high. We'll try to correct the mistakes next season. It was tough after losing eight games, so we needed to rectify the mistakes.”
