England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow expects the same 'wholeheartedness' from newly-appointed Test captain Ben Stokes, which the Durham all-rounder usually displays as a player.
England Test team will usher in a new era under the leadership of skipper Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum when they take on WTC champions New Zealand at Lord's on June 02.
England have won just 1 out of their last 17 Tests, and Bairstow believes the stint will be a huge learning curve for the new captain.
"Not much will change from Ben Stokes the player. The way he goes about his bowling and his batting, it's all whole-hearted stuff and his captaincy will be the same," Bairstow told BBC Test Match Special.
"It's going to be a learning experience for him as well," Bairstow added.
The blistering batsman also urged English fans to be patient with the leadership group.
"We need to understand and recognise that it's going to be a learning curve, but the experience that he's got around him, and the visions that he's got are great," he said.
"If we can all pull together in the right direction, then it is going to be an exciting brand of cricket," Bairstow added.
Bairstow played a key role in England emerging from being a poor white-ball team to becoming world beaters, and the Yorkshire cricketer feels that a similar turnaround is imminent for the red-ball team.
"It took a period of time for that transition to happen. Everyone's well aware that it didn't just happen overnight,"
"But it was the way in which someone had the bravery to go: 'Right. This is actually the way that we're going to play and we're going to stick to that.' And that person was Morgs [Eoin Morgan] and it's exciting," said Bairstow.
Stokes previously led England's Test team back in 2020- against the West Indies- when Joe Root was absent due to paternity leave.
England went on to lose that game. Come June 02; Stokes will hope to make a fresh start as he embarks on a tough assignment of reviving the fortunes of the Test team.
