Team India crashed to a nine-run defeat against Australia in their must-win Group A game of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on October 13. In pursuit of 152 runs for a win at Sharjah, Harmanpreet Kaur kept the chase alive with a fighting 54* but a final-over collapse tilted the tide back in Australia’s favor.

Much to everybody’s surprise, a well-set Harmanpreet took a single off the very first ball of the final over to bring a newly-arrived Pooja Vastrakar on strike. When the Indian captain retained strike a couple of deliveries later, she took another single, leaving Shreyanka Patil to fetch 12 runs off the remaining two balls.

Fans question final-over intent of Harmanpreet Kaur

Harmanpreet Kaur took two singles to expose the tailenders to a rampaging Annabel Sutherland, at a time when Team India required 14 runs for a win from six balls. As it turned out, the Indian team fell nine runs short of their target, with a well-set captain Harmanpreet being left stranded at the other end for a better part of the last over.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s move of not retaining the strike expectedly drew the ire of several Indian cricket fans, considering a number of them took to social media to question the intent of the ‘Women in Blue’ skipper.

After losing their final Group A match of the tournament, Team India will now be pinning their hopes on arch-rivals Pakistan to defeat New Zealand. If Pakistan manages to defeat New Zealand by any margin, India will become the second team from Group A to qualify for the semifinals after defending champions Australia.

However, a New Zealand win will help them join Australia in the semifinals instead. The match between New Zealand and Pakistan will be hosted by the Dubai International Stadium on October 14.
