Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals put up an exhilarating Super Over in match number 32 of the IPL 2025 season at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Seasoned campaigner Sandeep Sharma attained an all-time unwanted IPL record in the process. In other news, a senior first-class cricketer from England has been suspended for using a prohibited substance.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, April 16.

Capitals Win Super Over Thriller Vs Royals

Delhi Capitals edged out Rajasthan Royals in a tense Super Over battle during match 32 of the IPL 2025 season in Delhi. Batting first, the Capitals formed 188-5 from 20 overs courtesy of Abishek Porel’s 49, KL Rahul’s well-compiled 38 and blistering cameos from Tristan Stubbs and captain Axar Patel. For the Royals, Jofra Archer picked up the important wickets of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Rahul while Sri Lankan spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga chipped in with a wicket each.

In response, Mitchell Starc’s tight final over prevented Royals’ victory, even though Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana clubbed belligerent half-centuries for the visitors. Later in the Super Over, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs flogged Sandeep Sharma around to romp to a thrilling win with two balls to spare.

Sandeep Sharma Claims Unwanted IPL Record

Sandeep Sharma sent down four wides and a no-ball during the final over of the Delhi Capitals innings to bowl an 11-ball over for the Rajasthan Royals in match 32 of the IPL 2025 season. With his extensive spell, the speedster claimed an unwanted record of bowling the joint-lengthiest over in the history of IPL, levelling up with Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande for the unwanted record.

The evening took a turn for the worse for Sandeep Sharma, as the speedster also failed to contain Delhi Capitals batters KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs in the Super Over.

Rohit Sharma Reveals Why He Dropped Himself From 5th Test

Indian captain Rohit Sharma revealed the exact reason why he dropped himself from the playing XI of the fifth BGT Test against Australia earlier this year. During an interview with Michael Clarke, Sharma admitted that he was not hitting the ball well at the time and wanted Shubman Gill to get an opportunity in the series-decider at the SCG.

It is worth noting that Sharma underwent a horrid series with the bat, accruing just 31 runs from five innings at a dismal average of 6.20. Nonetheless, Shubman Gill failed to deliver in the SCG Test as Team India lost the five-match series 1-3.

Keith Barker Suspended For 12 Months By ECB

England’s first-class veteran Keith Barker has been suspended by the National Anti-Doping Panel after testing positive of using a prohibited substance during a routine drugs test. He was tested positive for Indapamide in May 2024, and was temporarily suspended a couple of months later by the Cricket Regulator. However, he subsequently accepted a violation of two of ECB’s Anti-Doping rules at a hearing.

Keith Barker’s suspension means that the 38-year-old will only be allowed to return to competitive cricket from July 4 onwards this year.

Rohit Sharma Stand At Wankhede Green-Lit By MCA

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has approved a provision of naming one of the stands at the Wankhede Stadium after legendary Indian captain and senior Mumbai Indians campaigner Rohit Sharma. On April 16, the MCA confirmed the decision through a social media post. As per the association, the Divecha Level Pavilion 3 will be named after the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy-winning cricketer.
