In a significant development, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are reportedly set to hold a crucial meeting with Rohit Sharma regarding his future as India's ODI captain. 

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the selectors are expected to meet on Saturday (October 4, 2025) to finalise the squads, with the defining agenda being a one-on-one discussion with Rohit Sharma regarding the leadership role.

Rohit, who has not played for India since the Champions Trophy 2025, is tipped to make a comeback for the ODI leg of the tour, having cleared his fitness test at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

"The defining point of the selection meeting, however, will be the captaincy for the ODIs - specifically, whether Rohit will be retained as captain. It is understood that the selectors plan to discuss the matter with him directly. Meanwhile, Rohit cleared his fitness test at the BCCI centre of excellence in Bengaluru recently" as per the reports by Cricbuzz.

The BCCI is keen to make a long-term plan leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the conversation with Rohit is expected to clarify whether he will lead India or if a transition in leadership is on the cards.

Rohit's recent fitness boost his chances

The 38-year-old recently underwent an impressive physical transformation, shedding nearly 10 kilograms. 

Rohit Sharma has been in stellar form in ODIs in recent years, the star player has featured in 273 ODIs and has scored 11168 runs at an average of 48.76 and strike-rate of 92.80. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, won the T20 World Cup 2024, and recently lifted the Champions Trophy 2025.

India’s tour of Australia begins with a three-match ODI series on October 19 (Perth), October 23 (Adelaide) and October 25 (Sydney). This will be followed by a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8.
