Angelo Mathews, Mushfiqur Rahim, Bismah Maroof among ICC's 'Player of the Month' nominees

Asians dominate in ICC's latest ‘Player of the Month’ nominees list. Across the six nominees spread across men's and women's categories, as many as five Asians find themselves in the shortlisting, courtesy of Sri Lankan men's Test series win in Bangladesh as well as Pakistan hosting Sri Lankan women for white-ball contests fuelling up the cricketing content for the month of May.

Under the spirited guidance of Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka overpowered Bangladesh 1-0 to register a rare series win away from home. Veteran Lankan campaigner Angelo Mathews made his way among the nominees by scoring twin tons across the two Tests, accumulating 344 runs at an average of 172. Fittingly, he was also adjudged as the 'Player of the Series' for his side's landmark win.  

Apart from Mathews, his teammate Asitha Fernando also made the cut for his zippy 10-wicket haul in the second Test at Dhaka. The right-arm pacer picked up figures of 6-51 during Bangladesh's second innings, thus setting up the match for his side.

Bangladesh's lone hero Mushfiqur Rahim is another nominee shortlisted by the ICC to win May's 'Player of the Month' honours. The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman piled up 303 runs across two Tests, including a face-saving 175* for his side in the second match.

Jersey's Trinity Smith, Pakistan's Tuba Hassan among rising stars acknowledged by ICC

Pakistan women, who pipped the Sri Lankan women in both ODIs and T20Is at home, were rewarded with two of their players getting acknowledged by the ICC. Captain and all-rounder Bismah Maroof is one of the two nominees in the list for her sterling performance with the bat in the three-match T20I series. She scored 65 runs as well as led her side to a 3-0 win against the visitors.

21-year-old Tuba Hassan is another Pakistani on the list as she claimed five wickets in the series. But, remarkably, the series against Sri Lanka also marked her debut in international cricket, and she picked up figures of 3-8 in her first game itself.

Jersey star Trinity Smith charted a remarkable all-round performance against Spain last month, scoring 59 and picking up 2-18 in the same game. At the age of 17, she made her debut in the same quadrangular series that also involved France and Austria.
