Sri Lanka A will lock horns with Hong Kong in Match 5 of the ACC Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024 at Al Amerat Cricket Ground Ministry Turf 1 on Sunday, October 20. With both teams reeling from losses in their opening games, this contest promises to be a mouth-watering clash as they look to put their best foot forward.

Sri Lanka A’s Quest for Redemption

Sri Lanka A's campaign started on a sour note, falling short by 11 runs against Afghanistan A. Opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka A's bowlers were taken to the cleaners, with the exception of Sahan Arachchige, who bowled a tight spell, conceding only 20 runs in his four overs.

However, the rest of the bowling attack, including Ramesh Mendis, Isitha Wijesundera, Nipun Ransika, and Eshan Malinga, had a day to forget as they struggled for control and failed to pick up a single wicket.

Amid the chaos, Dushan Hemantha emerged as the lone bright spot scalping six wickets for just 23 runs, a performance that kept Sri Lanka A in the hunt. While chasing 167, the team faced a bumpy ride with the openers, Yashodha Lanka (15) and Lahiru Udara (6), failing to get going.

Despite a gritty 51 off 32 balls by skipper Nuwanidu Fernando and a fiery 31 off 18 by Ahan Wickramasinghe, regular wickets dented Sri Lanka A's chase, and they were eventually bundled out for 155. They will now be eager to turn the tables and break their duck in this crucial match.

Hong Kong’s Battle for a Comeback

Hong Kong also tasted defeat in their first outing, as they managed 150/8 in 20 overs against UAE A. The top order faltered with Zeeshan Ali and Anshuman Rath contributing a mere 4 and 2, respectively.

Skipper Nizakat Khan started well but squandered his opportunity, departing for 25. Babar Hayat, however, stood tall, playing a lone hand with a blistering 85 off 61 balls, which included two fours and seven sixes. Unfortunately, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled like a house of cards.

In the bowling department, Hong Kong's Ayush Shukla struggled, leaking 24 runs in two overs without a wicket, while Nasrulla Rana and Yasim Murtaza had a similar tale of woe.

Yet, it was Ehsan Khan who delivered the goods, bagging 3/12 in his four-over spell. Hong Kong will be keen to deliver a more cohesive performance and turn the tide in this must-win encounter.

How Will the Al Amerat Cricket Ground Pitch Behave?

The surface at Al Amerat Cricket Ground has been a spinner's paradise so far, with substantial turn on offer. Pacers have found success by varying their pace and using the new ball wisely, while batters have needed to be patient and apply themselves before launching big shots.
