Hardik Pandya And? 4 Players Who Could Replace Rohit Sharma As India's T20I Captain

Legendary opener Rohit Sharma had a fantastic campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024, leading India to an ICC title after an eleven-year hiatus. Besides his leadership, Rohit grabbed a million eyeballs through his scintillating batting performances, amassing the most runs for the Men in Blue in the tournament.

However, soon after India lifted the World Cup, Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement, bidding adieu to the format.

Considering the next T20 World Cup is two years away, India would be keen to rebuild their core under a new captain for the mega event. So, let's see which players are the front-runners to succeed Rohit as the Indian captain.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya, who was Rohit Sharma's deputy in the T20 World Cup, will most likely be the Indian captain going forward.

He led Gujarat Titans to the title in the IPL 2022 before helping them qualify for the final in the subsequent edition.

Although he had a terrible IPL 2024 campaign as the Mumbai Indians' captain, Pandya has the team management's backing. That's why seeing him leading India in the shortest format shouldn't be surprising.

Jasprit Bumrah

Besides Pandya, ace Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah is another name India could consider for the T20I captain's role.

Bumrah, who won the player of the tournament award for his stellar performance in the World Cup, has a great understanding of the shortest format. In 70 T20Is, Bumrah has scalped 89 wickets at an unbelievable economy of 6.28.

However, considering his battle with injuries, the BCCI might not burden Bumrah with captaincy, allowing him to feature in important tournaments.

Suryakumar Yadav

Prominent batter Suryakumar Yadav could be another name India might consider for the T20I captaincy.

He has been a regular member of the T20I side, scoring 2340 runs at a blistering strike rate of 167.74 in 65 innings.

The 33-year-old recently led India in the T20I series against South Africa and Australia, in which the Men in Blue exhibited their dominance.

Shubman Gill

In a surprising move, the Indian selectors named Shubman Gill the captain for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

Although Gujarat Titans were unimpressive in the IPL 2024, some of Gill's on-field tactics earned massive applause from cricket pundits.

Given Gill's potential, it's safe to say that he will be the poster boy of Indian cricket in the post Rohit-Kohli era.

So, considering his talent and brand value, the BCCI might hand him over the T20I captaincy on a long-term basis.
