When it comes to comebacks, Yuvraj Singh has written the book on and off the field but this time, it wasn’t about six sixes or cancer battles. In a heart-to-heart chat on Curly Tales, the former Indian all-rounder got candid about something more personal: his relationship with his father, Yograj Singh and how it shaped the kind of father he wants to be to his son, Orion.
Yuvraj Singh Reflects On Yograj’s Parenting Style
Growing up under Yograj Singh, a former cricketer and strict disciplinarian, Yuvraj’s life was anything but easy. There were no shortcuts, no breaks and definitely no soft landings. From early mornings to relentless nets, his childhood was defined by a single dream: cricket.
“There were times when I didn't like it,” Yuvi confessed. “But I think sometimes you have to do things you don’t like to understand what you want to achieve. I was pushed a lot, but that is why I started playing for India when I was just 18.”
That push turned him into one of India’s most iconic match-winners. But it also came at a price. The warm father-son bond? Not much of that growing up.
Breaking The Cycle With Orion
Now a father himself, Yuvraj Singh is trying to rewrite the script.
“With my father, it was always about cricket. I don't want to be a coach to my kids – I want to be a dad,” he said. “The things I couldn’t do with my dad, I now do with my son.”
The Mom’s Take: Shabnam Singh Chimes In
Yuvraj’s mother, Shabnam Singh, who joined the interview, brought her trademark calm and humour. She spoke about Yograj’s intense training routines and how Yuvi never complained, even when pushed to the brink.
But in true mom fashion, she also dropped a fun memory.
“The first person he makes a fool out of is me, and every time, I get taken in,” she laughed, remembering the time she got pranked by her own son pretending to be a police officer.
Yuvi, ever the jester, grinned and teased: “Mom seems well-rehearsed for this interview.”
Closure After Years of Distance
For years, the Yuvraj-Yograj equation remained complicated. It was all fire and pressure, rarely warmth. But ahead of his 2019 retirement, father and son finally sat down for a long-overdue heart-to-heart.
That conversation, Yuvraj said, brought clarity and healing. And it’s that moment that probably laid the foundation for how he approaches fatherhood today.
