Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has given some valuable advice to Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the youngest player to ever play in the IPL. Vaibhav made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) last week. In his very first match, the young talent made a strong impression.
Virender Sehwag Warns Vaibhav Suryavanshi To Stay Grounded
He hit a six on his first ball faced, which was bowled by Shardul Thakur, and followed it up with another six off Avesh Khan’s delivery. Vaibhav ended up scoring 34 runs in his debut innings, joining an elite group of players who have hit a six off their first ball, including names like Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite.
However, Sehwag warned the youngster to stay grounded and not get carried away by the early praise.
"If you step out knowing that you will get praised for doing well, and criticized for not doing well, you will remain grounded. I have seen many players who come, get fame from one or two matches, then they do not do anything, because they think that they have become a star player," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
Sehwag further added that Suryavanshi should focus on having a long career in the IPL, just like Virat Kohli.
"Suryavanshi must aim for playing 20 years in the IPL. Look at Virat Kohli, he started playing when he was 19 years old, now he has played all 18 seasons. That is what he should be trying to emulate. But, if If he is happy with this IPL, thinking that he is now a crorepati, had a great debut, hit a six off the first ball, maybe we won't see him next year," he added.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 1.10 crore, despite being listed for a base price of Rs 30 lakh. The teenager made history by becoming the youngest player in IPL history to become a crorepati.
In the most recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the young opener scored 16 runs off 12 balls, but his team lost by 11 runs.
