There’s some concern over whether Sanju Samson will play in the upcoming match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In the previous game against Delhi Capitals, Sanju hurt his side (rib area) while batting and had to leave the field. He didn’t return to bat, and RR ended up losing that match in the Super Over.

What Exactly Happened?

The injury happened when Sanju tried to play a cut shot against Delhi’s spinner, Vipraj Nigam. The ball hit his left side, and he looked in pain right away. The team physio came on the field to check on him, but soon it was clear that he couldn’t continue playing.

After the match, Sanju gave a small update saying he was feeling okay but not fit enough to return during that game.

Will Sanju Play Against LSG?

RR’s next match is against LSG on Saturday, April 19. Head coach Rahul Dravid gave an update about Sanju’s condition.

"Sanju experienced a bit of pain in the abdominal area. So we have gone for scans. He has done some scans today so we are waiting for the results of those scans. And then once we get a bit more clarity around the scans and the severity of [the injury] we'll take a decision going forward and we'll see what happens.” Rahul Dravid said in a press conference (quoted by ESPN Cricinfo)

Sanju Samson’s Ongoing Injury Struggles in IPL 2025

Sanju has been dealing with injuries this season. He started the tournament as an “impact player” in the first three matches because of a thumb injury. During that time, Riyan Parag took over as captain and wicketkeeper. Sanju only returned to wicketkeeping after getting clearance from BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.

If Sanju doesn’t recover in time for the LSG match, Riyan Parag is expected to lead the team again.
