The UAE has become the stage for a gripping white-ball battle as Bangladesh and Afghanistan lock horns in a series packed with drama. After a dominating victory in the T20I series against the Afghans, the Tigers faced a setback in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series.

As Bangladesh’s top order crumbled, Towhid Hridoy emerged as the beacon of hope. But after the heartbreaking defeat, the Bangladeshi batter admitted his dismissal was a turning point of the clash.

Hridoy looks back on the dismissal that turned the tide

After a clean sweep in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, Bangladesh entered the ODI series with confidence, but it turned out to be a heartbreaking one. Batting first, the Afghan bowlers proved heavy on the Tigers as their top order crumbled early on. Standing on that crucial point, a 100-run partnership between Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Towhid Hridoy boosted Bangladesh’s hope.

As the batters were guiding the side towards glory, Hridoy’s unfortunate run-out dismissal flipped the script. After the match, the Bangladeshi batter addressed his dismissal as a ‘crime’ as it was a crucial turning point of the game.

“Yes, I think it (run-out) was a hundred percent the turning point. From that situation, we had brought the team back to a good position, and getting run out like that was a crime. It was a poor decision from me. Hopefully, if I face a similar situation again, I'll handle it better,” he said.

Batting woes that seal the fate

After a solid performance in the T20I series, Bangladesh’s batting order faltered in the first ODI game. Initially, Azmatullah dismissed Tanzid Hasan, and then Saif Hasan, and Shanto walked out early. Mehidy Hasan and Hridoy fought to revive the innings, but their dismissals proved costly as the rest of the lineup couldn’t rise to the occasion.

Reflecting on their performance, Towhid Hridoy said batting failure was a big worry for them as they were 40-50 runs short. Praising the bowlers’ effort, he stressed that a stronger batting display could have completely changed the outcome of the game.

“I think we were about 40 to 50 runs short. If we could have achieved that, the scenario of the game would have been different. It wasn't an easy wicket; it offered help to the bowlers. The bowlers bowled well enough. From a batting point of view, I believe we fell 50 runs short,” he added.

Defending the 221-run total, the Bangladeshi bowlers gave their best on the field but the Afghan brilliance took the game away from them. With a commanding five-wicket win, Afghanistan seized a 1-0 lead in the series, while Bangladesh will be looking to mount a stronger comeback in the next clash.
