Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar praised Rohit Sharma for leading India to a much-needed T20 World Cup victory, ending an 11-year drought of ICC titles.

India went undefeated throughout the tournament and triumphed over South Africa by seven runs in the final held in Barbados on June 29, 2024.

Rohit Sharma was in stellar form, scoring 257 runs in eight matches, including three half-centuries. Gavaskar was highly impressed by Rohit’s leadership and compared him to past greats Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.

Rohit joins those other two cricketing giants: Gavaskar

“Rohit Sharma joins those other two cricketing giants, Kapil Dev and Dhoni, in captaining India to a World Cup trophy. Like the duo were, Rohit is also a people’s captain,” Gavaskar wrote in his column.

Gavaskar highlighted Rohit's tactical insight, which often surprises both opponents and fans.

“Well liked, not only by his team members but by the entire Indian cricketing community. The cricket fans also love his laconic style of leadership, and tactically, he is as good as the sharpest in the game. Some of his moves can surprise you and make you scratch your head as to the reason, but the end result is more often than not exactly what the team needed at that moment,” he added.

Gavaskar also noted Rohit’s selfless approach, saying,“He led from the front, showing a complete disregard for personal milestones and instead looking to get the team off to a flying start every time. India is blessed to have him as their captain.”

In a significant turn, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the T20I format following the World Cup win, alongside teammates Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli, ending their illustrious careers in the shortest format in style.
