Legendary cricketer Sourav Ganguly has credited his decision to replace Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the Indian captain for the team's recent T20 World Cup triumph in the Caribbean.

Recently, India defeated South Africa in a thrilling final to end their ICC title drought and claim the T20 World Cup trophy at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Besides leading India to the title with his astute leadership, veteran opener Rohit Sharma top-scored for the Men in Blue in the competition.

'It was I who appointed Rohit as captain' - Sourav Ganguly

Meanwhile, ex-captain Sourav Ganguly has credited his decision to appoint Rohit as the skipper for India's successful World Cup campaign.

Speaking to Bengali media agency Aajkaal, Ganguly remembered when he received undue backlash for removing Kohli as the Indian captain.

“When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it," Ganguly said.

"In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team,” he added.

After winning the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their T20I retirement

With Gautam Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as the head coach, India will cross swords against Sri Lanka in six white-ball matches after the ongoing Zimbabwe series.
