Former Chennai Super Kings batter Robin Uthappa opines that current Indian captain Rohit Sharma has drawn inspiration from MS Dhoni's captaincy style.

Speaking on the Star Sports show 'Captain Rohit's Legacy,' alongside cricketing legends Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, and former England skipper Eoin Morgan, Uthappa discussed Rohit's captaincy journey with the Mumbai Indians, highlighting the influence of Dhoni on Rohit's leadership approach.

Reflecting on Rohit's evolution as a leader, Uthappa recalled his stint with the Deccan Chargers, where he tasted success in the IPL 2009. He emphasised Rohit's self-assured nature and his ability to seamlessly blend Dhoni's tactics with his own, making his leadership style distinctively his own.

"We must also remember that he had been a part of Deccan Chargers that had won the IPL in 2009. He had a feeling of what it takes to win. He was an integral part of that side as well. One thing about Rohit is that he’s a very self-assured person. Nonchalance is a way of life for him. As a leader, he picked up a lot of nuances from MS (Dhoni)," Robin Uthappa said on Star Sports.

"But he’s added his own touch to it and made it his own. He’s not scared to show his emotions on the field. It’s very unique to Rohit. It’s only something that he does."

With an impressive record of 87 wins and 67 losses in 158 IPL matches as captain, Rohit has led the Mumbai Indians to back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020, joining Dhoni as the only player to achieve this feat.

Despite Mumbai Indians' recent struggles to reach the IPL final since 2020, Rohit's astute leadership remains undisputed. However, the management's decision to entrust the captaincy to Hardik Pandya for the upcoming season suggests a shift in leadership dynamics.

As Mumbai Indians gear up for the 2024 IPL campaign under Hardik Pandya's captaincy, they will kickstart their journey with an eagerly anticipated clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT), replicating last year's Qualifier 2 encounter, scheduled for March 24 in Ahmedabad.
