Australian opener David Warner took to social media to share a contrasting view on the light show that took place at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium during their World Cup 2023 clash against the Netherlands on Wednesday. This comes after all-rounder Glenn Maxwell termed the light display during the drinks break as a 'horrible idea'.

Warner and Maxwell at odds over World Cup light show

Warner and Maxwell played crucial roles in Australia's impressive 399/8 score, leading them to a historic victory over the Netherlands by 309 runs. Particularly noteworthy was Maxwell's blazing century, achieved in just 40 balls — setting a new record for the fastest hundred in ODI World Cup history.

The all-rounder capped off his performance with a final score of 106 off 44 balls, earning him the man of the match accolade. Warner also contributed with a magnificent 104.

After the match, during a press conference, Maxwell expressed strong reservations about the light show. He recounted a similar experience at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game, claiming that such lights caused significant discomfort, taking a toll on his eyes and even causing headaches. Maxwell reckoned that while such displays might be entertaining for the audience, they are detrimental to the players.

"I just think it's the dumbest idea for cricketers when you've got this thing coming at you quickly and your eyes take so long to adjust and I think we just lost a wicket and the Perth Stadium lights went nuts and I was at the other end and it took me ages to get my eyes to go again and I felt like I had a headache. So I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it but it's a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, but horrible for the players," said Maxwell.

However, Warner seemed to be on the other side of the fence regarding the matter.

Taking to Twitter, he mentioned, indirectly responding to Maxwell's comments, that he thoroughly enjoyed the light display, highlighting its contribution to the overall atmosphere of the game. He also stated the importance of fans in the sport and how such experiences are curated keeping them in mind.

"I absolutely loved the light show, what an atmosphere. It's all about the fans. Without you all we won't be able to do what we love,” wrote Warner.

Australia will face Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in their next group-stage match in Dharamsala.
