India young star, Shubman Gill, has been given a new responsibility as the vice-captain of the national team. After India’s tough 1-3 loss to Australia in the Test series, Gill defended his team, saying that one bad series does not define them. Despite the setback, India are looking ahead, with key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Gill himself returning for the three-match ODI series against England. This will be their last challenge before heading to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy.

At just 25, Shubman Gill is seen as a potential future captain of India’s white-ball team. With Rohit Sharma getting older, Gill is expected to gradually step up into a leadership role. Speaking about his new responsibility, Gill said he sees it as a challenge and an opportunity to lead by example.

"I take it as a challenge to lead my way, firstly with my performance and then definitely in the field if Rohit bhai would want my opinions. It's my duty to let him know what my thoughts are," he said.

Gill also addressed the criticism surrounding India’s loss in Australia. He reminded everyone that the team has a strong track record and one bad series doesn’t change that.

"One series does not define the form of the whole team. There are a lot of players who, in the past, have performed consistently in a lot of series and tournaments," he further said.

"Definitely, we did not play as per our expectations in the Australian series, but still we played some good cricket. We were unfortunate not to have (Jasprit) Bumrah on the last day and we would have won the match and the series would have been a draw and this talk wouldn't have happened," he added.

India Cruise To An Easy Win Against England

In the first ODI against England, Gill let his bat do the talking. He played a key role in India’s chase, scoring crucial runs while forming important partnerships. With Shreyas Iyer (59) and Axar Patel (52) supporting him, India successfully chased down England’s total of 248. Debutant Harshit Rana also impressed with the ball, taking 3 wickets alongside Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up 3/26.

Gill anchored the innings brilliantly, building strong partnerships—94 runs with Shreyas Iyer for the third wicket and 108 runs with Axar Patel for the fourth. His calm approach and leadership on the field showed why he is being considered a future captain.
