With Team India in a transition phase, there’s growing speculation about who will take over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma in Tests. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly set its eyes on two young players who could fill this leadership void: Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Both players are considered capable of leading the team for years to come, but what makes Yashasvi Jaiswal stand out as a potential successor to Rohit Sharma? Let’s explore why Jaiswal could be groomed for the role of India’s next Test captain.

Rohit Sharma, though still an influential figure in Indian cricket, is nearing the end of his career. With the Indian team moving into a phase of transition, discussions have naturally shifted to who will lead India in the future. The BCCI has reportedly been considering Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal as potential candidates. Both are young, with the potential to lead the team for a decade or more, which is why they are on the radar of selectors.

Jasprit Bumrah, often considered a leader, faces doubts about his fitness and ability to play long Test series, which may prompt the selectors to look for a more stable captaincy option. Shubman Gill, too, has been discussed as a potential captain but has yet to make a lasting impact in Test cricket. 

In this context, Yashasvi Jaiswal stands out as someone who could be groomed for the role of India’s Test captain.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Impressive Record

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been on the radar of selectors for a while now, thanks to his impressive performances across formats. Though he may not have played ODIs for India yet, his stats in Test and T20I cricket speak volumes about his potential.

In 19 Test matches, Jaiswal has accumulated 1,798 runs, including four centuries, at an average strike rate of 65.6. His T20I record is equally impressive, with 723 runs in 22 matches, boasting a strike rate of 164.31 and an average of 36.15. These numbers show that Jaiswal has the skill and consistency required to perform at the highest level.

His performances have made him a regular member of the Indian setup, even earning a spot in the Champions Trophy squad. While Jaiswal lacks experience in leadership roles, his potential as a future captain has not gone unnoticed. With the right grooming, he could emerge as one of the best leaders in the Test format.

Jaiswal has proven his ability to perform under pressure, which is a key attribute for any leader. While Rishabh Pant has led India in T20Is and has experience captaining in the IPL, Jaiswal has shown that he can step up when it matters. Even though Jaiswal is relatively new to international cricket, sources suggest that the selectors are keen on elevating players based on their performance, not just their experience. This approach could make Jaiswal a strong candidate for the Test captaincy in the future.

Although Jaiswal hasn’t captained any team so far, his consistent performances across formats and his ability to handle pressure make him a promising choice. His age and maturity could allow him to lead the team for many years, and with the right guidance, he could soon take the reins from Rohit Sharma.
