Having suffered back-to-back defeats, Australia were on the lookout to notch up their maiden ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 victory and had Sri Lanka overcome.

Led by Pat Cummins, Australia displayed an excellent turnaround in bowling to stifle Lankan batters, who collapsed and held for 209. In reply, Mitchell Marsh held Australia's fort, scoring a valiant 52, with Josh Inglis and Marnus Labuschagne doing the cleanup work in the backend of the chase.

Marsh, who slammed his maiden World Cup fifty, hoped that the win over Sri Lanka would act as a stepping for the Australia side moving ahead in the competition.

Speaking to Star Sports, Marsh lauded skipper Cummins and Inglis, highlighting their roles in the crucial win.

'Hopefully, that's a stepping stone for us' - Mitchell Marsh

"It was a really good day for us. We came into the game with a little bit of pressure after the slow start, but our experienced guys stood up today. We're away. I wouldn't say soul-searching but there was plenty of hurt [after the loss to South Africa]. Hopefully, that's a stepping stone for us in the right direction," Marsh Said.

"I felt like I was batting well tonight, and I probably got ahead of myself (on the run-out). The boys were calm, and the way we finished it off was great. I actually went for one over, but I was shut down. We have a heap of options - three quicks, Zampa, Maxwell, Stoin and myself. He [Cummins] always has a calm demeanour. The way he bowled and his bowling changes were fantastic. Inglis is a fighter and loves a contest. He plays spin well and backs his skills. Hopefully it's the start of a long career for him," the all-rounder concluded.

For Australia, Adam Zampa's redemption is pivotal, with games now moving onto more spin-friendly conditions. With two points under their belt, Australia will clash against Pakistan on October 20 at Bangalore.
