There was a time when four world-class players dominated the cricket universe. The term 'Fab Four' was coined by former New Zealand cricketer Martin Crowe back in 2014 for Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, and Steve Smith, who were making headlines in all formats of cricket.
But all these star batters have taken retirement from one or two formats of the game. Kohli has retired from Test and T20Is, shifting focus to ODIs only, while Steve Smith has hung up his boots from the 50-over format, and Joe Root has left T20Is. However, Williamson is the only batter who remains active in all three formats, although he rarely makes appearances in the national squad due to injuries or workload.
Aaksh Chopra reveals his new generation's 'Fab Four'
Meanwhile, former India cricketer-turned commentator, Aakash Chopra, recently named his four contenders for the next generation's Fab Four. He has listed Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Harry Brook, and Rachin Ravindra in his Fab Four.
"The Fab 4, I feel are almost here. Shubman Gill is a part of that Fab 4 and will remain in the future. Same is true for Yashasvi Jaiswal. He is mainly concentrating on one format now but he'll play all three formats and will be pretty good there as well. Then I am thinking of Harry Brook who will rule the roost in all three formats with his style of play. The 4th player will be Rachin Ravindra. He has both the technique and the temperament," Chopra said in a video on his X account.
The stats behind the rise of the new Fab Four
The former player has made a valid point, as the numbers speak volumes about the four players. Gill has appeared in 39 Tests so far and has scored 2826 runs. In ODIs, he has played 55 matches and scored 2775 runs so far. While in T20Is, he has played 28 games, scoring 705 runs, which definitely doesn't do justice to his talent.
Regarding the 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal, he has played 26 Test matches and scored 2,420 runs. Moreover, in T20Is, he has scored 723 runs in 23 games. However, he has appeared in only one ODI so far, scoring 15 runs. New Zealand young cricketer Rachin Ravindra has scored 1224 runs in 17 Tests, 1233 runs in 33 ODIs, and 452 runs in 30 T20Is.
England's newly-appointed limited-overs captain, Harry Brook, has played 30 Tests and has scored 2820 runs. In ODIs, Brook has played 32 matches and scored 995 runs, while in T20Is, he has scored 914 runs in 49 games.
