Punjab Kings trumped Rajasthan Royals in match 59 of the IPL 2025 season by 10 runs in Jaipur. The outcome took the visitors to second position on the points table, falling just behind table-toppers RCB on the 10-team standings.
With eight wins and just three defeats from 12 matches, Punjab Kings also finds itself at the brink of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs, a dream unrealized by fans of the franchise since the 2014 edition of the tournament.
Irfan Pathan congratulates Punjab Kings
Former Indian all-rounder and prominent commentator Irfan Pathan has congratulated the Punjab Kings franchise after the Shreyas Iyer-led group outclassed Rajasthan Royals by 10 runs in Jaipur. A former Punjab Kings player himself, Pathan took to X and praised captain Shreyas as the franchise inched closer to ending its 11-year playoff drought.
He wrote:
“11 Sal Ka intezar khatam hone hi wala hai. Well done.”
As it turned out, Punjab Kings batted first and carted 219-5 from 20 overs despite slipping to 35-3 at one stage of the match. Nehal Wadhera (70 off 37) and Shashank Singh (59* off 30) slapped sparkling half-centuries, with captain Shreyas Iyer compiling 30 crucial runs from 25 balls, all while batting with a finger injury.
In response, Vaibhav Suryavanshi smeared 40 from 15 balls, and senior opener Yashasvi Jaiswal tonked a 25-ball 50 as Rajasthan Royals raced to 76 in just five overs. However, a fighting three-wicket haul from Harpreet Brar took the wheels out of Royals’ chase as they fell 10 runs short of their target.
Punjab Kings will now face Delhi Capitals in their penultimate league match of the IPL 2025 season on Saturday, May 24 at the same Jaipur venue.
