Gautam Gambhir aims subtle dig at Virat Kohli with Suryakumar Yadav praise?

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has opened up about Suryakumar Yadav's impressive knock of 68 runs against South Africa on Sunday.

India were eventually beaten by the Proteas but they did manage to post a relatively competitive score despite a horrendous start with the bat. The likes of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were sent back to the hut in quick succession and India were staring at an ultimate humiliation.

However, Suryakumar Yadav stepped up to save his team's blushes and propelled India to a score of 133.

Gambhir believes that it was the best T20I innings from an Indian batsman. The former World Cup winner said that Surya did well to manage the game after the fall of quick wickets. He also added that it was a commendable knock on a pitch which was assisting South Africa's fast bowlers heavily.

He said (as quoted by NDTV):

"I have not seen a better T20 innings than this. This is probably the best T20 innings by an Indian. The wickets had fallen, and on this pitch to do this is something."

Gambhir's comments could be construed as a subtle dig towards Virat Kohli, who recently played an astonishing knock against Pakistan. The former Indian opener has had his far share of issues with Kohli during their playing days as well.

Kohli's knock of 82* against Pakistan is widely considered as one of the finest T20I performances from the modern era.

Meanwhile, India will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance against Bangladesh on the 2nd of November now. The defeat to South Africa will have given them a timely reality check and Rohit Sharma will urge his men to step up and take the trophy home.
