Brief Scores: South Africa: 382-5 (50 overs) [Quinton de Kock: 174 (140), Heinrich Klaasen: 90 (49); Hasan Mahmud 2/67 (6), Mehidy Hasan Miraz 1/44 (9)] defeated Bangladesh: 233 all out (46.4 overs) [Mahmudullah: 111 (111), Litton Das: 22 (44); Gerald Coetzee 3/62 (10), Marco Jansen 2/39 (8)] by 149 runs.

A marauding bunch of South Africans ransacked Bangladesh to claim the spoils of war from their recent World Cup 2023 confrontation at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. With their comprehensive all-round spectacle, the Proteas also inherited two fresh points to jump to number two on the 10-team points table.

Quinton de Kock soars with World Cup best 174

South Africa’s template of winning the toss and batting first seems to be working wonders for them off late as they charted yet another 300-plus total, their fourth of the ongoing 2023 World Cup. Dashing opener Quinton de Kock overcame team’s top-order setback with a calculated 131-run partnership with interim captain Aiden Markram.

Following Markram’s dismissal at the hands of Shakib Al Hasan for 60, Quinton shared 142 additional runs from just 87 balls with Heinrich Klaasen for the fourth wicket. The wicketkeeper-batsman channeled enough composure to conjure his third World Cup 2023 century and the 20th of his glittering ODI career.

Upon reaching his triple-figure score from 101 balls, the dashing opener minted the next 74 runs from just 39 deliveries. By the time he became one of Hasan Mahmud’s two victims of the day, South Africa had already soared past 300 with five overs still in the bank.

Quinton de Kock’s 174 from 140 turned out to be the biggest benefactor of the innings, and it subsequently allowed Klaasen and David Miller to carpet-bomb a battered-and-bruised Bangladeshi attack with 65 runs from just 25 deliveries in the death. Klaasen himself finished with a 49-ball 90 as South Africa surged to 382-5 from their 50 overs.

BAN battered as Proteas reap benefits of big total

South Africa’s new-ball pace battery, led by Marco Jansen and Lizaad Williams, tore through Bangladesh’s top-order in the latter’s run-chase. Captain Shakib Al Hasan was himself entrapped by Williamson for just a run to his name as Bangladesh ended up losing half their side for just 58 on the board.

Mahmudullah at number six delayed the inevitable with his frustrating lower-order resistance. However, his run-a-ball 111 proved nothing but a mere footnote from Bangladesh’s lackluster response, one which turned out to be 149 runs short of South Africa.

Each of the five Proteas bowlers utilized in the innings reaped the benefits of defending a monumental total, with speedster Gerald Coetzee claiming three wickets including that of centurion Mahmudullah in the death.

Jansen, Williams and Kagiso Rabada finished with two wickets each while ace spinner Keshav Maharaj pocketed a Bangladeshi scalp of his own in the match.
