South Africa consigned West Indies to a huge defeat in the second Group B match of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at the Dubai International Stadium on October 4.

South African speedster Marizanne Kapp jolted West Indies early with the wicket of captain Hayley Matthews in just the third over of the match. Matthews’ opening partner Qiana Joseph, meanwhile, was cleaned up by Nonkululeko Mlaba a couple of overs later as West Indies ended up losing both openers inside the first powerplay.

Kapp also accounted for the key wicket of Deandra Dottin as West Indies crashed to 32-3 in less than seven overs.

Shortly after West Indies reached 57-3 at the halfway stage of the innings, they lost well-set Shemaine Campbelle (17 off 21), Chinelle Henry (first-ball duck) and Aaliyah Alleyne (seven off eight) all in quick succession to South African spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba, who claimed astonishing figures of 4-29 from her four overs.

At 83-6 with five overs still remaining, Stafanie Taylor anchored the remainder of the innings with a crafty 44* from 41 balls. Fellow unbeaten batter Zaida James also belted a swift 15* as West Indies reached 118-6 by the competition of their 20 innings.

In pursuit of 119, South African openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits accumulated 43 runs from the first six overs, and 68 at the halfway stage of the innings without the loss of any wicket. At the time, both Wolvaardt and Brits were approaching their respective half-centuries at 36* and 29*, respectively.
