During Match 17 of the World Cup 2023 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, a momentary lapse in judgment cost India's Shreyas Iyer his wicket against Bangladesh. The promising batter's untimely departure came just when India seemed to have their chase under control.

IND vs BAN: Shreyas Iyer throws away his wicket for 19

Iyer, who had joined forces with the seasoned Virat Kohli, looked set to take India to a comfortable victory, chasing a target of 257. The pair built a crucial 46-run partnership after the loss of both openers, with the scoreboard reading 132.

Their stable partnership provided the innings much-needed stability after losing Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill; however, Iyer’s wicket came against the run of play.

It all happened during the first ball of the 30th over, bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Eager to escalate the run rate, Iyer made a bold decision to charge down the track, aiming to dispatch the ball over midwicket. The execution was far from perfect, with the ball making contact at the toe-end of his bat.

The resultant shot had more elevation than distance, providing an opportunity for Mahmudullah to complete a good catch in the deep mid-wicket region. Iyer's innings came to a close at 19, which included two boundaries off 25 balls.

Despite this setback, the Men in Blue appear to be in a commanding position. After 31 overs, the scoreboard reads 188/3. Kohli was batting on 59, while KL Rahul is steadily setting in with his score of 7. With 69 runs required off 19 overs, the target seems well within India's reach.

However, Bangladesh can't be written off just yet. A couple of breakthroughs could tilt the balance in their favour, especially in the absence of India's ace all-rounder, Hardik Pandya. The lanky all-rounder sustained an ankle injury during his bowling spell in the first innings, which might make India's middle order a bit more vulnerable.
