Pakistan number four Mohammad Rizwan took field for his country in their must-win World Cup 2023 standoff against a rampaging South African unit in Chennai. The star batsman made his way to the crease inside the powerplay following the sudden dismissals of openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq.

Joining his skipper Babar Azam in the middle in a bid to stage Pakistan’s recovery, the in-form batter almost became South African speedster Marco Jansen’s second victim in succession as he was dropped off the very first ball by the bowler himself.

What ensued thereafter was a series of verbal exchanges between Rizwan and Jansen, with the former winning the psychological battle by hitting confident boundaries in the early stages of his innings.

Mohammad Rizwan was reprieved off the first ball of his innings as an outstretched Marco Jansen failed to hold on to a catch. The Pakistan batting veteran heaved across the line only to get a leading edge past the third-man region for a boundary in the very next ball.

Jansen, seemingly agitated from the drop catch, went up to the crease to share a few words with the cricketer. Rizwan responded back as the two players ended up being involved in a heated exchange. Their verbal spat even sustained until the conclusion of the over after the right-hander left alone a good length delivery.

Mohammad Rizwan was eventually dismissed by Marco Jansen’s bowling teammate Gerald Coetzee after racing to a confident 31. The cricketer had wild swipe across the line against a sharp bouncer from Coetzee, only to secure a top-edge back to the South African wicketkeeper.

Rizwan’s dismissal reduced Pakistan to 86-3 inside their 16 overs.
