West Indies Women's legendary all-rounder Hayley Matthews had a poor start to the T20 World Cup 2024 as she got out cheaply in her side's tournament opener against South Africa Women at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Opening the batting for West Indies, Matthews managed only ten runs before Marizanne Kapp made her fall into her trap.

The incident occurred during the third over of the West Indies Women's innings after South African captain Laura Wolvaardt won the toss and opted to field first. Although Matthews looked comfortable during her brief stay, Qiana Joseph's persistent struggle forced her to play a loose shot, as she tried to take on the experienced Kapp.

From over the wicket, Kapp bowled a good length delivery way outside the off stump, prompting Matthews to play a cut shot.

However, as the batter went for it, she only managed an outside edge, with wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta taking a sharp catch behind the stumps to send her packing. Thus, Hayley Matthews, who was supposed to hold the Windies' innings together, departed scoring only ten runs.

Taylor, Dottin Join Hands As West Indies Lose Their Openers Early

After Kapp outfoxed Matthews, Joseph was cleaned up by South Africa's wily spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba in the fifth over. The southpaw couldn't even get a bat on most of the deliveries, being dismissed for a sloth-paced 14-ball four. Her departure brought the destructive Deandra Dottin, who joined former captain Stafanie Taylor in the middle. As of writing, West Indies women were in a spot of bother, placed at 27 for two in 5.3 overs.
