Pakistan, under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, defeated hosts South Africa at Newlands in the second ODI by 81 runs to record their second successive SENA series win in two months. Demonstrating a collective team effort, senior men Babar Azam, Rizwan and all-rounder Kamran Ghulam excelled with the bat before Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah swung their way to a remarkable Pakistan victory.

South African speed demon Marco Jansen justified captain Temba Bavuma’s call of fielding first by getting rid of Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique for a two-ball duck. In-form opener Saim Ayub also failed to sustain his prolific run-scoring spree as he was bounced out by 18-year-old Proteas debutant Kwena Maphaka at 53-2.

Overcoming the early setback, senior men Babar Azam and captain Mohammad Rizwan forged 115 runs together for the third wicket to pilot Pakistan past the 150-run mark.

Both cricketers unfurled cunning half-centuries, with Babar chipping in with 73 off 95 while Rizwan top-scoring with a near run-a-ball 80.

Against the run-of-play, Andile Phehlukwayo and young Maphaka deprived the two Pakistanis of well-deserved centuries as two quick wickets ensured the visitors slipped to 192-4 in 36 overs.

Agha Salman rebuilt Pakistan innings to some extent with a rapid 33 in the backend, and shared 50 runs with Kamran Ghulam for the fifth wicket. While Salman picked out David Miller off Bjorn Fortuin, Ghulam raged on and blasted four boundaries and five sixes in his fiery 32-ball 63.

Ghulam’s all-out assault at the death turbo-charged the visitors towards a monumental 329-run total from 50 overs. For South Africa, Marco Jansen (3-71) and debutant Kwena Maphaka (4-72) added two more wickets to their tally at the death.

Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah and spinner Abrar Ahmed prevented the two South African openers, Temba Bavuma (12 off 17) and Tony de Zorzi (34 off 40) from flourishing after getting comfortable at the crease.

Rassie van der Dussen (23 off 30) and Aiden Markram (21 off 30) also failed to convert their respective starts into notable knocks as the two middle-order batters were toppled by spinners Agha Salman and Ahmed by the time of reaching 113-4.
