Riding on the back of centuries from David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, followed by a disciplined effort with the ball, Australia beat South Africa by a huge 123 runs in the second ODI at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series and kept a massive step ahead to clinch their first ODI series win in South Africa since 2011.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and invited Australia to bat first. But the decision to bowl first by expecting a two-paced deck like that of in the first ODI backfired massively for the hosts as the Aussie openers got themselves off to a flying start, managing a century-run stand inside the powerplay.

Travis Head, with David Warner at the other end, added 109 runs for the first wicket. Head departed after doing the primary damage with a 36-ball 64, which was followed by a golden duck from Mitchell Marsh as Tabraiz Shamsi took two wickets in two balls to bring South Africa back in the game.

However, Warner alongside last game’s hero Marnus Labuschagne did not allow South Africa to settle and kept the momentum going for the Aussies. The duo added a massive 151 runs for the third wicket which broke the back of South African bowling. Warner went on to score his 20th ODI century, his fifth against South Africa, before Andile Phehlukwayo got his wicket in the 33rd over.

Labuschagne kept the scoreboard ticking from the other end and completed his second ODI century. Josh Inglis also joined the party and made a quickfire half century. Eventually, Australia finished with 392 for eight at the end of 50 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi (4/61) was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa with the rest of the Proteas attack having a bad day with the ball.

In pursuit of 393, South Africa got themselves off to a good start as Quinton de Kock and captain Temba Bavuma added 81 runs for the first wicket inside the first nine overs. De Kock departed just before the end of the powerplay and South Africa were 84 for the loss of one wicket after 10 overs.

South Africa were on the right track and were looking to continue the momentum they gained from the powerplay. However, Adam Zampa, as usual stood tall for Australia as he got the important wicket of Bavuma just after the powerplay and soon went on to remove Aiden Markram cheaply in his very next over.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller joined hands to rebuild some momentum and keep South Africa alive in the chase. But again, when things were getting better for the hosts, Zampa came back into the attack and removed the dangerous looking Klaasen.

It all went downhill for South Africa since the wicket of Klaasen as Miller soon fell at the other end as well. It was just a matter of time and eventually, South Africa got bowled out for 269, falling 123 run short at the end.
