Eyebrows were raised when Punjab Kings decided to retain only two players ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The two stars were Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh as Preity Zinta's team went into the auction with a purse of 110.15 crore and they utilised it to perfection.
However, many experts were baffled when Shashank Singh was retained despite other options being available, including the option to retain Ashutosh Sharma. But with IPL 2025 reaching its business end, it seems Preity Zinta has played a masterstroke by retaining Shashank and here's why.
Top-notch performances throughout
Throughout the IPL 2025 season, Shashank has shown exemplary batting skills and has played the role of a finisher to perfection. The match Vs RR was a prime example of his batting prowess as he came in at number 6 when the score read 101/4 with almost 9 overs left. By the time the innings ended, Shashank was unbeaten at 59 off 30 balls and helped Punjab cross the 200-run mark.

In 12 matches he has amassed 273 runs, but most of those runs have come in crucial situations which showcases his class.
Flexible in batting position
Retaining Shashank meant that PBKS have a batter who is flexible in his batting position. Normally, Shashank comes to bat at number 7 and plays as a pure finisher. However, against RR, he was brought in at number 6 at over number 11. He rebuilt the innings and then played the finishers role to perfection as PBKS amassed the highest-ever total at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
