Hosts Pakistan sniff a potential drought-ending Test victory after enjoying a dominant Day 3 against England at the Multan Cricket Ground on October 17.

Pakistan’s rampaging spinners Sajid Khan and Noman Ali skittled out the remaining four English wickets, all within the opening hour of Day 3. With England resuming their first innings at 239-6 in 53 overs, overnight batters Brydon Carse (4 off 29) and Jamie Smith (21 off 55) failed to add much to the total on the third morning as they were both dismissed by Sajid and Noman respectively.

Sajid also snared the wickets of Matthew Potts and Shoaib Bashir as the off-spinner claimed sensational figures of 7-111 from 26.2 overs. Khan’s seven-fer, coupled with Noman Ali’s 3-101 helped Pakistan gain a sizeable 75-run lead over England (291 in 67.2 overs).

Emboldened with a 75-run lead, Pakistan lost each of their top three batters within the first 15 overs of the innings for just 43 on the board, all courtesy of young English spinner Shoaib Bashir. Pakistan’s debutant and first-innings centurion Kamran Ghulam also failed to replicate his Day 1 success as he was dismissed for just 26 by Jack Leach at 77-4.

Mohammad Rizwan (23 off 43) and Saud Shakeel (31 off 51) failed to capitalise their starts as a brief lower-order collapse left Pakistan languishing at 156-8. At the brink of getting bundled out shortly after the Tea break, Agha Salman and bowling hero Sajid Khan defied the English attack with a fighting 65-run partnership for the ninth wicket.

Salman top-scored in the innings with a swift 63 (89 balls), as the right-hander frustrated the visitors for nearly an hour before getting toppled by Brydon Carse (2-29). Salman’s rearguard defiance extended Pakistan’s total to 221 in 59.2 overs, thus setting up a competitive 297-run target for England.

For the visitors, spinners Shoaib Bashir (4-66) and Jack Leach (3-67) claimed seven wickets between them while pacemen Carse and Matthew Potts chipped away with the remaining three scalps.

In pursuit of 297, and left to survive the remaining 11 overs of the day, England lost both openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett to Noman Ali and Sajid Khan respectively. Khan orchestrated the early breakthrough in the opening over by getting rid of first-innings centurion Duckett for a duck.

By stumps, England reached 36-2 from 11 overs to require another 261 runs for a series win, with Ollie Pope (21* off 30) and Joe Root (12* off 26) still batting at the crease.
