England dominated Pakistan on Day 4 of the first Test, with Harry Brook and Joe Root putting on a batting masterclass at the Multan Cricket Stadium. England declared at 823/7, with Brook scoring a monumental 317 runs and Root contributing 262, both creating history along the way. 

The Multan Test will go down as one of the most eventful Test matches in modern-day history. On a highway-esque pitch, Pakistan scored 556 runs in the first innings. 

England scripts several records with sensational hitting

However, England's counterattack lasted two days, with Harry Brook and Joe Root scripting history with a 454-run partnership. While Brook slammed a majestic triple century (317), Root finished with a career-high 262 knock as England declared the innings at a mammoth total of 823/7.

To add to the home fans' misery, Pakistan's response to this massive total was poor, as they lost six wickets by the end of Day 4, with their batters struggling on the same pitch that England had thrived on. As Day 5 looms, the hosts face an inevitable defeat.

Having said that, on an eventful Day 4 of the Multan Test between England and Pakistan, several records were broken with Brook, Root leading the charge. Here's a list of a few historical stats.

  • Root-Brook's 454-run partnership is  the highest ever partnership by England, fourth highest of all-time in Test cricket.
  • This is the third time in the history of the game that two batters have scored 250 in the same Test innings and first time for England.
  • Harry Brook's 317- only the sixth Englishman to score a triple century. The highest score by an England batter in 34 years.
  • Harry Brook is second fastest to score 300 in the history of the game balls faced (310 balls). He stands behind Virender Sehwag who used 278 balls for his triple ton against South Africa in 2008
  • Joe Root is England’s leading Test run scorer ahead of Cook and 5th on the all-time list.
  • With 35th Hundred, Joe Root jumped to sixth on the all-time list, now ahead of Brian Lara, Sunil Gavaskar, Mahela Jayawardene and Younis Khan.
  • Joe Root is also the first Englishman to surpass 20,000 international runs across formats and the 13th overall.

Joe Root's extraordinary innings of 262 off 375 balls in the first Test against Pakistan at Multan has added to his growing list of achievements, further solidifying his legacy as England's top Test run-scorer. Root's dominance throughout the series has placed him in the spotlight, as his recent form has allowed him to challenge records held by some of cricket's greatest legends.

One of the most notable milestones that Root is chasing is Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record of most runs scored in red ball format (15921). He's just 3,257 runs away from surpassing the God of Cricket to immortalise his name in the history of Test cricket.
