New Zealand captain Kane Williamson made a roaring comeback into his side in their must-win World Cup 2023 match against Pakistan in Bengaluru. Batting at number three and arriving to the crease in the 11th over of the innings, the batting veteran staged a grand 180-run second-wicket partnership with Rachin Ravindra.

Playing just his second match of the ongoing tournament after slapping a match-winning 78* against Bangladesh, Williamson unleashed a scintillating 95-run knock against Pakistan’s high-flying attack in his comeback game.

Remarkably, the BlackCaps skipper attained a remarkable New Zealand record through the course of his knock, one which saw him surpass former captain Stephen Fleming.

Williamson becomes NZ’s leading run-scorer in World Cups

Williamson made his World Cup debut during the 2011 edition of the tournament co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Making his fourth World Cup appearance in 2023, the cricketer played his 25th match on the big stage by taking field against Pakistan at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The prolific right-hander listed 95 runs from just 79 balls during his 180-run second-wicket partnership with Rachin Ravindra. Notably, Williamson’s latest World Cup epic took him past former captain Stephen Fleming for an all-time New Zealand record.

Out of his 6,727 career ODI runs, the 33-year-old has tallied 1,084 of them in World Cup matches to become New Zealand’s all-time leading run-getter at the big stage. Fleming, with 1,075 runs to his name from 33 matches, has now slipped to second in the list of highest run-getters from his country in ODI World Cup events.

Earlier in the tournament, Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 78 and leg New Zealand to an emphatic eight-wicket over Bangladesh. Owing to an untimely injury, the cricketer was ruled out of his side’s subsequent four fixtures until he made a comeback into the playing XI for the all-important clash against Pakistan.
