In a recent development, Shubman Gill has finally put an end to his string of bad luck with the coin. On Friday, during the ongoing second Test match against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Gill won the toss for the first time in his captaincy career and chose to bat first on October 10, 2025.

It is important to note that this toss marked the end of a frustrating six consecutive toss losses for Gill in Test cricket. Earlier, Gill lost five toss during the Anderson-Tendulkar 2025 series against England and the opening Test against West Indies last week in Ahmedabad.

It is vital to mention that if Gill had lost the toss today, he would have equalled an unwanted record held by former New Zealand captain Bevan Congdon. He has lost seven matches without winning a toss as Test captain.

Gill now shares second place on that list with New Zealand's Tom Latham, both of whom had lost six tosses before finally winning one.

Gambhir, Bumrah celebrate Gill’s first toss win

After Shubman Gill won the toss it was clearly visible that Indian dressing room was thrilled. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja, pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, and all-rounder Axar Patel were seen laughing and congratulating Gill as he smiled broadly during the pre-match ceremony.

Another talking point is that India entered the second Test with an unchanged playing XI. On the other hand, the West Indies has made two changes in the playing XI.

At the time of writing this article, India has started well in Delhi and has made 149 runs at the loss of one wicket. Jaiswal and KL Rahul have opened the batting for India. However, India lost its first wicket in the form of KL Rahul (38 runs off 54 balls). After his wicket, B Sai Sudharsan has joined Jaiswal at the crease.
