In the 29th match of IPL 2025, the Mumbai Indians are facing Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. After posting a commanding total of 205/5 in their 20 overs, Mumbai got off to a dream start with the ball as Deepak Chahar removed dangerous opener Jake Fraser-McGurk on the very first delivery of the innings.
With that wicket, Deepak Chahar notched his 14th dismissal in the first over of an IPL innings, joining an elite group of bowlers known for striking early as Trent Boult and Bhuvneshwar Kumar lead the chart.
Chahar Bags First Wicket For Mumbai To Build Record!
Chahar, bowling from over the wicket, delivered a gentle away-swinger on a good length outside off. Fraser-McGurk, with no foot movement, pushed at it too early and ended up chipping the ball to covers where Will Jacks completed a simple catch. A golden duck for the DC opener left the hosts reeling at 0/1 in the very first over of a daunting chase.
After bagging the wicket, Chahar etched his name alongside elite bowlers who also managed to pick multiple wickets in the very first over in IPL. Let's take a look at the tally.
Bowler | Wickets | Innings Played |
Trent Boult | 31 | 98 |
Bhuvneshwar Kumar | 27 | 128 |
Praveen Kumar | 15 | 89 |
Deepak Chahar | 14 | 78 |
Sandeep Sharma | 13 | 78 |
Alongside this, Deepak Chahar also becomes the 10th MI bowler to pick up a wicket on the first ball of the innings in IPL.
Fraser-McGurk’s dismissal was a major setback for Delhi Capitals, who now face chasing down a big total on a surface that is already showing signs of grip and seam movement. His early departure has put the pressure squarely on the middle order to rebuild against a disciplined Mumbai attack.
Chahar's Early Strike Put Mumbai Ahead
After being asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians posted 205/5 thanks to explosive knocks from Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir. Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav also chipped in with quickfire runs.
Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi, finishing with 2/23 from his four overs, while Vipraj Nigam also claimed two wickets despite being expensive.
DC Start Off Weak
In reply, Delhi Capitals were 32/1 in 2.5 overs at the time of writing. After losing Jake Fraser-McGurk on the very first ball, Karun Nair and Abishek Porel were trying to steady the innings with the required run rate climbing to over 10 runs per over.
With Deepak Chahar’s early breakthrough, Mumbai Indians have put themselves in a strong position to control the game, while Delhi’s batting unit faces a stiff challenge in this high-stakes run chase.
