In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2024), Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, was fined a hefty amount of Rs 12 lakh after maintaining a slow over-rate in match No. 33 against Punjab Kings on April 18, 2024. 

In the same ongoing IPL season, Rishabh Pant captain of Delhi Capitals, was the first team to be fined for breaching this IPL code of conduct and was fined Rs 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate in two consecutive matches. Along with him, the entire team was also fined with a deduction in match fee by 25%. 

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer was also fined for the same, during their match against Rajasthan Royals. 

The newly appointed captain of Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2024, Shubman Gill, was also penalised for maintaining a slow over rate in a fixture against Chennai Super Kings

          

What is Slow Over Rate in IPL?

The average number of overs bowled by the fielding side in an hour of play is known as the over rate. 

In test cricket, the bowling team is expected to maintain 15 overs per hour, in ODI 14.28 overs and in T20s 14.11 overs according to the ICC's rule. 

In the Indian Premier League, taking into consideration the two strategic timeouts of 2 minutes and 30 seconds each. The bowling side is expected to maintain an over rate of 14.11 and finish their quota of 20 overs in one hour and 30 minutes. 

Prohibiting any delays due to weather conditions or any other unforeseen circumstances. 

The team that has made the offence for the first time in the season, the captain of the bowling team will be fined Rs 12 lakhs. 

For the second time, the captain will be fined INR 24 lakhs along with the other 10 players who will be fined six lakhs or 25% of their match fees. 

And if the offence is still continued for the third consecutive time the captain of the bowling team will be fined 30 lakhs and will be banned for one match. The other 10 players in the team will also be fined 12 lakhs or 50% of their match fees.
