West Indies play without jersey sponsor; cover logos on old shirts against Pakistan

Financial troubles have been synonymous with West Indian cricket for over a decade now. Things came to fore once again in the 1st T20I against Pakistan when several West Indian players were seen playing with their old jersey, having covered the logo of former sponsors ‘Sandals’.

The Sandals deal ended with the onset of ICC T20 World Cup, a four year association. West Indies have been without a sponsorship since then, but a few floating reports suggested that they will be entering a six-figure deal with another company for a period of three years.

On the night, a few West Indies players were seen wearing the old jersey in Karachi having covered up the Sandals logo.

West Indies have a busy schedule ahead as they head back home after their Pakistan outing and will straight on take up the Irish challenge starting 8 January.

India to host Afghanistan for ODI series in March 2022

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has announced the FTP schedule for 2022-23 where the side is slated to play 37 ODIs, 12 T20Is and three Tests during the course. The schedule will begin in January with a three-match ODI series against Netherlands at home and the Afghan team will then travel to Zimbabwe in January-February for three ODIs and five T20Is. India will also host Afghanistan for three ODIs in March 2022. “We are pleased to announce our FTP schedule for 2022-23. This includes a total of 37 ODIs, 12 T20Is & 3 tests in the period. Moreover, the national team will be taking part in various ICC & ACC events in two years,” the ACB said in a Twitter post. Afghanistan will play a one-off Test against Ireland during their tour in July-August which will also comprise five ODIs. They will later play a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe in November-December which will also be the away fixtures. The Asian nation will play two T20Is and five ODIs as well on this tour. Apart from this, Afghanistan also have the two Asia Cups, T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup in the FTP schedule for 2022-23.

VVS Laxman takes over as head of the National Cricket Academy

Former India batsman VVS Laxman has started his journey as the the new head of the National Cricket Academy on Monday. "First day in office at the NCA! An exciting new challenge in store, look forward to the future and to working with the future of Indian cricket," Laxman said in a social media post. The BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has said that Laxman is shifting to Bangalore for the next three years. "He (Laxman) is shifting to Bangalore for next three years from Hyderabad just to serve Indian cricket. It's remarkable," Ganguly told PTI. "Of course, his earnings will drop but yeah, he has agreed. His wife and kids will also shift. His children will now study in a school in Bangalore and there will be a massive change as a family to shift base," he added. Laxman has taken the baton from Rahul Dravid who was earlier appointed as the head coach of the Indian team. Dravid had a good start to his stint as Team India defeated New Zealand in the T20Is and then the Test series at home. The side will now travel to South Africa for three-match Test and as many ODIs.

Quinton de Kock to miss 2 Test matches against India

South Africa’s first choice keeper batsman Quinton de Kock will be missing two out the three Test matches in the upcoming South Africa vs India series. De Kock will be on paternity leave awaiting the birth of his first child. Given the bio-bubble protocols in place for the series along with the Omicron situation, it is very possible that de Kock will play just one match in the Test part of the tour. However, SA believe that their key left-handed lower-order batsman will be only out for the final game against India. In his place, South Africa would probably go with Kyle Vereynne who debuted against West Indies this year in June. He has not been in a good patch of form, but if not Verreynne, then SA will have to go with uncapped players like Ryan Rickleton.

Rohit Sharma’s ruled out of Test series against South Africa

India opener and new white-ball captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test series against South Africa after pulling his left hamstring, the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) informed. Priyank Panchal has been named as his replacement. Sharma, who was recently named the vice-captain of the Test side after Rahane was axed from the post, suffered the injury during the net session before the Indian squad entered quarantine in Mumbai. Panchal, on the other side, had travelled to South Africa with India ‘A’ side and scored 96, 24 & 0 in three innings during the course. Panchal has played 100 FC games and has notched up over 7000 runs at a healthy average of 45.52 including 24 centuries and 25 fifties.
