WATCH: Brathwaite, Samit Patel retire out during a Blast fixture

The North Group fixture of the ongoing T20 Blast between Birmingham Bears (Warwickshire) and Nottinghamshire saw a unique instance of two opposition players - Carlos Brathwaite (Warwickshire) and Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire) - retiring out.

In what turned out to be a rain-affected 8-over-a-side encounter, Birmingham Bears batted first and went on to post 98/4 thanks to handy cameos from Jacob Bethell (17 off 9 deliveries), Chris Benjamin (36 off 17 deliveries), skipper Brathwaite (17 off 11) and Alex Davies, who smashed an unbeaten 4-ball 14.

Brathwaite smashed seamer Jake Ball (0/30 in 2) for a four and a six in the penultimate over of the innings but decided to retire out following its completion.

However, his replacement Sam Hain did not get to face a single delivery as Alex Davies, the right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman, went on to smash 14 off 4 deliveries with the help of a four and six, ensuring Birmingham finished on a high.

In response, Nottinghamshire got off to the worst possible start as Olly Stone dismissed Joe Clarke off the first ball of the innings.

However, Alex Hales and Ben Duckett proceeded to restore order by smashing 55 runs in the next 3.2 overs.

Hales was once again at his brutal best, smashing as many as 4 sixes and a four to race his way to a 9-ball 30.

But, with Jacob Lintott getting rid of them in one over, Nottinghamshire were once again pushed to the backfoot.

With 15 needed off the last six deliveries, Nottinghamshire needed both Tom Moores and Samit Patel to go hell for leather. But Samit could only manage 2 runs off the couple of deliveries he faced, and, as a result, he decided to retire out off the penultimate delivery of the game.

It didn't matter, though, as Warwickshire ultimately edged out Nottinghamshire by 1 run.

This is not the first time that such a thing has happened in a T20 game. Last month, Rajasthan Royals' spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retired out during the fixture against the Lucknow Super Giants. He was replaced by Riyan Parag.
