Afghanistan players expressed gratitude towards a healthy crowd present at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai to witness history as the spirited nation upstaged their experienced neighbours and longstanding nemesis Pakistan at the ICC World Cup 2023.

The players led by skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Afghan spin king Rashid Khan rallied together to take a lap of honour at the historic venue while being greeted with love and support from the fans present inside.

Heaps of them were Indians joined by Afghanistan's national representatives who cheered throughout the lap taken by the cricketers and enjoyed their heartening glory on the cricket field after undergoing extensive pain and ecstasy from previous defeats against this opposition.

Even though Afghanistan ran Pakistan close on multiple previous occasions, the new Test members struggled to overcome the last hurdles and succumbed to the pressure. On Monday (October 23), however, they produced their most clinical batting display and progressed to reach the challenging 283-run target.

Afghanistan's Heartening Lap Of Honour In Chennai

Notably, it was not just Afghanistan's first-ever win in One-Day Internationals against Pakistan after seven successive defeats but also their maiden win over the Asian giants at a major ICC event and their second remarkable upset of the ongoing World Cup.

The giantkillers had earlier defeated tournament contenders England at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi after coming up with a magnificent allround performance. But for the sheer weight of history staked against them and the high-voltage nature of the rivalry, many Afghanistan players, including skipper Shahidi and veteran Mohammad Nabi, deemed it a win bigger than the one pulled off versus the Englishmen.

The crowd in Chennai has always been regarded highly for its knowledge and intelligence of the game apart from the spirit with which they have treated the away sides, showcasing immense respect and dignity towards the players.

Pakistan cricketers were famously cheered on as they entered a lap of honour here despite winning a heated battle for the Chennai 1999 Test match against India in what remains one of the greatest sporting moments on Indian shores.
