Match Referee David Boon who was overseeing the first three matches of the ongoing Ashes series in Australia has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the fourth Test of the series scheduled starting January 05 in Sydney.
Notably, all the participants of the third Test of the series, such as the players and families of both sides, match officials including Boon have been going through Covid-19 testing since December 27 when multiple cases emerged out of the visitors’ camp.
Boon has been found positive in the latest round of testing and is going through isolation of 10 days in Melbourne. The International Cricket Council has replaced him with Steve Bernard as the referee for the fourth Test but Boon is expected to return to the role for the final Test of the series starting January 14 in Hobart.
The emergence of Covid cases in England touring party and then among broadcasters put question marks over the fate of the series but Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley has said that the boards have been dealing with these issues on day to day basis and is adamant about completing the three-match long series.
Australia lead the series 3-0 after thrashing England in the third Test of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
