Australia batter Usman Khawaja was included in this fourth Ashes Test against England in Sydney and the left-hander didn’t disappoint. Coming in to bat at number five, Khawaja steadied the ship for the hosts and notched up a fine hundred on his return.
Australia were 117/3 when Khawaja took the guard. He along with Steve Smith provided the much-needed resistance to the home team as the two batsmen stitched a partnership of 115 runs with Steve Smith.
The stand was eventually broken by Stuart Broad after he sent Smith back in the hut for 67 and the hosts then lost a couple of more wickets to get reduced to 285/6 with the likes of Green and Carey back in the hut.
But Khawaja held the fort from one end and he rebuilt the innings with captain Pat Cummins. The two batters chipped in with 46 runs for the seventh wicket before Cummins was undone for 24 by Broad.
The left-handed batsman was then joined by Mitchell Starc in the middle and they further frustrated the England bowlers with a 67-run stand for the 8th wicket.
Khawaja was eventually out for a well-compiled 137 as Australia ended the first innings at 416/8 (D).
