Indian women’s spinner Sneh Rana made history at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday by becoming the first Indian woman spinner to take a 10-wicket haul in a single Test match.

Facing South Africa in a one-off Women’s Test, Rana showcased her remarkable skills and resilience, propelling India to a dominant position.

India, after declaring their first innings at a formidable 603/6, saw Rana quickly dismantle the Proteas’ top order. On the second day, she dismissed South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt and her fellow opener Anneke Bosch. Delmi Tucker followed suit, marking Rana’s third wicket of the innings.

Day three was a masterclass in spin bowling from Rana. In a sensational first-hour spell, she claimed five wickets, reducing South Africa from a promising 236/4 to 266 all out. Notably, her eight-wicket haul in the first innings put her in an elite club, matching Neetu David’s record against England in 1995.

Continuing her stellar performance, Rana added two more wickets in South Africa’s follow-on innings, making her the second Indian woman, after Jhulan Goswami, to achieve a 10-wicket haul in a Test match. Despite South Africa mounting a resistance through a 190-run partnership between Suné Luus and Wolvaardt, Rana’s perseverance paid off on the fourth day

Rana’s final figures were a commendable 10 wickets for 188 runs over 65.3 overs, including 16 maidens. This record-breaking performance also saw her surpass Deepti Sharma’s nine-wicket haul against England in 2023.
