The chatter for India's T20I captain for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 could finally close down with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah suggesting that current skipper Rohit Sharma will lead the one-time 20-overs world champion in the soon-to-start edition.

Speaking during the renaming of the Saurashtra Cricket International Stadium to the Niranjan Shah Stadium ceremony, Shah stated that India will lift the coveted trophy under Sharma. Post the ICC World Cup 2023, Sharma's role as India's white-ball captain has been debated, with several candidates emerging for the post, which include the likes of Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav.

I am confident: BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

"I want to promise you that we'll lift the trophy in Barbados in the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. Hum Bharat ka jhanda gadenge".

Rohit Sharma, who made his T20I WC debut in the inaugural edition under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is the only player to feature in all editions of the global showpiece event, which India have lifted just once in 2007.

Under Sharma, India got knocked out of the 2022 edition, losing to eventual winners England in the semi-final, by a massive 10-wicket margin.

The opener made his comeback into the T20I national side against Afghanistan earlier this year, where India notched up a 3-0 series win, making Rohit Sharma (42) India's most successful 20-overs captain pipping former leader behind Mahendra Singh Dhoni (41).

Meanwhile, Sharma will lead India in the third Test against England, that gets underway tomorrow at Rajkot.
